Adult Sunday School

Introduction

The purpose of the adult Sunday school program is to systematically lay a foundation of basic Biblical teaching for those seeking to know about the Christian faith,  for new believers in Christ and for general believers in Christ.  For most of the year, three classes are offered at around 12:00 noon after the Sunday worship service.  The classes are (1) Seekers Class, (2) New Believers Class and (3) General Believers Class.  Depending on the need of the situation, for some periods of time, the New Believers Class may be replaced by a Discipleship Class.  The content of each of the classes are described in the corresponding links.

A Bible test is provided to help a person decide which class he/she should attend.

Seeker Class

This class covers the basic beliefs of the Christian faith – including the doctrines of God the Creator, Jesus the Son, the nature and purpose of man, the fall of man, the need for repentance and faith unto salvation.  It is suitable for seekers as well as believers wanting a sharper understanding of Christian beliefs. (estimated 10 weeks)

New Believers Class

This class covers the teaching on salvation and sanctification using Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapters 1-8 as the basic text with emphasis on the workings of the blood of Christ and the Holy Spirit. (estimated 20 weeks)

Discipleship Class

This class covers basic Christian Living (Christian Lifestyle) consisting of the attitudes and behavior of the Christian in the various spheres of life using Matthew 5-7 (the Sermon on the Mount), Romans 12-15, Ephesians 5-6, Genesis 1-3, and 1 Thessalonians 4:1-9 as the primary texts.  The spheres of life addressed are personal disciplines (in regard to dealing with our motives and desires, our sins and our prayer life), our relationship with our spouse, our relationship with our children, and our relationship to authorities and outsiders including those in the workplace. (estimated 20 weeks)

General Believers Class

This class covers several different units.

  • The Church – this unit covers the nature and purpose of the church and our commitment to it and its mission.  It also covers spiritual gifts, leadership training and patterns for church growth and expansion.  The primary texts are found in Acts and the letters of Paul. (estimated 20 weeks)
  • Issues of our Generation – in this unit we apply Biblical principles to the issues we are facing today which may not be directly covered by the other units.  For example – technology and globalization, abortion, homosexuality, stewardship of the earth’s resources, the just war, Christian responsibility towards the world’s poor (including the AIDS epidemic), raising godly children in an ungodly world, the disunity of the church, a Christian response to Islam, and the return of Christ (20 weeks).
  • Church History – this unit will give a brief history of the church starting from first century till now with some emphasis on the church in China.  (estimated 10 weeks).
Bible Test

This test helps us to know what more we need to learn about the Christian life and teaching and can guide us to the most appropriate Sunday school class at this time.
